When I was studying and teaching martial arts in college, I met a fellow student who I did nothing but drills with for an entire semester. He had no martial arts experience whatsoever. During the summer break, he and his brother were attacked by three people. My friend ducked a punch coming at him, struck the attacker in the solar plexus, took out the other guy with a kick, then went and helped his brother with the other attacker. When he came back the next semester he told me the story. I told him primary striking areas would have been better, but I’m glad he and his brother defended themselves successfully. He thanked me again and told me he would have never even thought of doing the things he did, under the stress of a multiple attack or any other time, and that I had saved him and his brother.

In a separate attack and episode, a sister of a girl I was dating during college was being stalked by a man. He had threatened the sister. I spent many hours that night working my drills with her to help her to react well under a stressful situation. The next night she was attacked in a parking lot. The guy escaped with his life, but not without being injured first.

I was beginning to realize, thanks to these and other experiences, and my methods of teaching physical education classes, that it was possible to teach someone how to defend oneself quickly, efficiently, and realistically. I began researching other martial arts and applying my classes in exercise physiology and kinesiology. I was also studying movement education and physical education for special education. Both of these stressed alternative teaching principles and methods.

It taught me to look even beyond Plato and Copernicus for my answers. It taught me to look, within myself. Of course I already had an extensive martial arts background and was able to apply my college training and my martial arts training to develop many drills which, when put together, form a unique self-defense system that is yours and only yours.
